The 5 Euro Coin “The 50th
Anniversary of the Death of Georges Lemaître”

“The Big Bang Theory”. Everybody has heard the term since this theory is one of the basic theories in
cosmology .It explains the beginning of the Universe as we know it. It was launched by the Belgian
Priest Georges Lemaître. The general idea of the theory is that the start of the Universe was the result
of the explosion of a primal atom, a “Big Bang”. Based on this theory George Lemaître made a near
exact estimation of the age of the Universe, namely 15 billon years.
The Royal Mint of Belgium issues a 5 euro cupronickel coin to commemorate the 50th
anniversary of
the death of Georges Lemaître.
