Beginning in 2010, the United States Mint will mint and issue a new one-cent coin with a reverse design emblematic of Lincoln's preservation of the United States as a single, unified country. The design for this new Lincoln one-cent coin was also unveiled at today's ceremony.
The new reverse will feature a union shield with a scroll draped across it bearing the inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 13 vertical stripes of the shield represent the states joined in one compact union to support the Federal government, represented by the horizontal bar above. In addition, the shield device is featured throughout the halls of the U.S. Capitol Building on frescoes by Constantino Brumidi, the artist of the Capitol during Lincoln's presidency.

The United States Mint will host the launch ceremony for the newly designed 2010 "Union Shield" Lincoln Cent on February 11 2010 in Springfield, Illinois at 9:30 a.m. CT.

2010 Lincoln Cent Two-Roll Set - “Preservation of the Union” Available on April 8
WASHINGTON - The United States Mint will accept orders for the 2010 Lincoln Cent Two-Roll Set - "Preservation of the Union" beginning at noon Eastern Time (ET), on April 8, 2010. The set, priced at $8.95 each, is composed of 100 general circulating coins-one roll of 50 coins minted at the United States Mint at Philadelphia (no mint mark) and one roll of 50 coins minted at the United States Mint at Denver ("D" mint mark). Each coin roll is wrapped with special United States Mint coin paper depicting the new design, a "P" or "D" representing the roll's mint of origin and "50¢," representing its face value.
The new one-cent coin will circulate from this year forward. The coin's reverse (tails side) design is emblematic of President Abraham Lincoln's preservation of the United States as a single and united country, as required by Title III of Public Law 109-145, the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. The horizontal bar features the inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM -"out of many, one"-while the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is depicted along the upper rim of the coin. The reverse image was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer Lyndall Bass and executed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.

While the obverse (heads side) continues to bear the familiar Victor David Brenner likeness of President Lincoln that has appeared on the coin since 1909, the reverse (tails) features a union shield with a scroll draped across with the inscription ONE CENT. It includes the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and ONE CENT, and was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer Lyndall Bass and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.
This set is comprised of 100 coins -- one roll of 50 coins minted at the United States Mint at Philadelphia (no mint mark) and one roll of 50 coins minted at the United States Mint at Denver (“D” mint mark). Each coin roll is wrapped with special United States Mint coin paper depicting the new designs, a “P” or “D” representing the roll’s mint of origin and “50¢,” representing its face value. These rolls contain one-cent coins used in regular commercial transactions. However, because these coins have never been circulated, they also make a great addition to your private collection or a wonderful gift for someone special. These historic coins are available for a limited time only.
