Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences and in 2009 we celebrate globally the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei’s first astronomical observation through a telescope.

The vision of the International Year of Astronomy is helping people rediscover their place in the universe with a strong emphasis on education, public engagement and involvement from young people of all communities.

Following on from the success of the 2008 year sets, the Royal Australian Mint releases the new 2009 themed $1 and a 20 cent coin design that will feature in the two coin set and six coin set in both uncirculated and proof finishes.

The $1 coin features the iconic Parkes Telescope. Designer Caitlin Goodall wanted facets of the dish to look jewel-like and the proof finish certainly gives this coin that appearance. Keen eyed coin enthusiasts will observe the sheep and fencing images reflecting the unique Australian rural landscape that surrounds this 64-metre Telescope used in Radio Astronomy.
