On 23 June 2010, the Czech National Bank is putting into circulation a CZK 200 commemorative silver coin to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the greatest Czech Art Nouveau painter Alfons Mucha.
The coin was designed by the academic sculptor Ivan Řehák. The coin is made of an alloy of silver and copper and will be minted by the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou. The coin is minted in two versions, normal quality and proof quality, which differ in surface treatment and edge marking.
Alfons Mucha (1860-1939) was born in Ivančice u Brna in a family of a court usher. The Czech Art Nouveau painter and designer became internationally famous for his posters for the Parisian actress Sarah Bernhardt. A cycle of large-format canvases, entitled The Slav Epic, on which he worked for 18 years, is considered his life’s masterpiece.
Mucha also used his universal artistic talent in the design of postage stamps and Czechoslovak banknotes. He started to design the banknotes at the end of 1910s. In 1919, he made a design of the 10 koruna banknote, 20 koruna banknote, 100 koruna banknote and the today very rare 500 koruna banknote. The last banknote by Mucha was the 50 koruna banknote from 1929. Banknote designs by Alfons Mucha can be seen at the CNB Exhibition in Prague.

On 23 June 2010, the Czech National Bank is putting into circulation a CZK 200 commemorative silver coin to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the greatest Czech Art Nouveau painter Alfons Mucha. The coin is minted from an alloy containing 900 parts silver and 100 parts copper and is issued in two versions, normal quality and proof quality, which differ in surface treatment and edge marking. Proof-quality coins have a highly polished field, a matt relief and a plain edge with the inscription “ČESKÁ NÁRODNÍ BANKA * Ag 0.900 * 13 g *”. Normal quality coins have milled edges. The coin is 31 mm in diameter, weighs 13 g and is 2.3 mm thick. As with any other coins, deviations in diameter of 0.1 mm and thickness of 0.15 mm are allowed. Upward deviations in weight of 0.26 g and silver content of 1% are permitted.
The obverse side of the coin depicts Alfons Mucha’s decorative panel “Music” from “The Arts” cycle. The name of the state “ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA” is located around the left-hand edge of the coin. The bottom edge of the coin bears the denomination and abbreviated monetary unit “200 Kč”. The mark of the Czech Mint is located at the right-hand edge of the coin. The reverse side of the coin features a portrait of Alfons Mucha on the background of Art Nouveau decoration. The years “1860 ◦ 2010” and the inscription “ALFONS MUCHA” are located at the right-hand edge of the coin. To the left of the bottom of the portrait are the initials of the designer of the coin, the sculptor Ivan Řehák.
Each coin comes with a light-orange postcard-sized catalogue card. The relief of the coin is dry-stamped through silver foil. The text is given in Czech and English. The card is the same for the normal-quality and proof-quality coins.
