Der zweite BU-Münzsatz des Jahres 2012 ist der hohen Münzkunst gewidmet. Er setzt das im Vorjahr begonnene Thema „Münzen und Sammeln“ fort und enthält die finnischen Umlaufmünzen des Jahres in Stempelglanz, d.h. in unzirkulierter Qualität.

A coin is a work of art. The coin set dedicated to coin art includes all of the Finnish metal circulation coins for 2012 in matt, that is BU-quality. The coin series contains both of the year’s two-euro commemorative coins: 10 years of the Euro and Helene Schjerfbeck.

From the initial idea of the designer to carving the design on the master die, the birth of a coin takes skill, creativity and a strong vision. The smooth surface of a coin is as much a vehicle for inspiration as any blank canvas. The two-euro commemorative coin for 2012 was created by sculptor Erja Tielinen.

A plaster mould is used in making the die for minting the coin. Carving a coin is meticulous work, since the depth of the coin’s design is a mere seven hundredths of a millimetre. The blade used for the work is 3–5 hundredths of a millimetre wide, so making the tools for striking coins requires years of practice.

The powerful lines and emotional message of Helene Schjerfbeck’s painting are communicated in three dimensions by the design carved on the coin’s surface. The year 2012 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Helene Schjerfbeck, one of Finland’s most eminent artists.
