The Central Bank of Ireland will mark the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising as part of it's coin programme in 2016.
In January, a €2 coin will be issued into circulation which features a depiction of the statue of Hibernia, the historic personification of Ireland, on the roof of the GPO in Dublin. The GPO was the headquarters of the provisional government during the rising. The designer of this coin, Emmet Mullins describes the design as, “featuring a depiction of the statue of Hibernia on top of the GPO where she has witnessed the events of 1916 and watched the growth of a nation since the Rising. The coin will also feature the centenary dates and the name Hibernia in hand-rendered lettering influenced by the book of Kells”. This will be the first time that Ireland has issued its own commemorative €2 coin; previous commemorative €2 coins issued by Ireland were part of a European Union initiative. This €2 coin will be available to purchase in a proof set and an annual mint set in January.
The Central Bank of Ireland will also release silver and gold proof commemorative coins which have been designed by Michael Guilfoyle. The design of the silver and gold proof coins commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic which was read by Patrick Pearse outside the GPO on 24 April 1916. The designer, Michael Guilfoyle, describes the coin as “featuring a depiction of the statue of Hibernia in front of an arrangement of key words and phrases from the Proclamation of the Irish Republic”.
