A silver commemorative coin in honour of Finnish climate research

In climate research, Finland is one of the top countries in the world. Special expertise is available here in, for instance, Arctic climatology, greenhouse emissions, and in the study of the carbon balance of forests and soil. This important theme is also honoured by a 2022 silver commemorative coin.

Nature's own air quality meter – beard lichen – is depicted on the obverse side of this commemorative coin. The relief is composed of a root-like branching network. The insightful motif can also be interpreted as representing the lungs – reminding us of the importance of air quality and its study.

The small dots on the value side represent the small particles created in the air and the data obtained from them. The points form a line diagram, the curve of which can be interpreted as mirroring the fell landscape of the Pallas-Sodankylä observation network.
