The Cassandra (Zerynthia Cassandra) is a stunning butterfly endemic to Italy, and was recently also found in the Republic of San Marino. Highly localised and rare everywhere, it is in retreat in a large part of its home territory, where it lives in small, often scattered populations.
Its presence is intimately linked to the Aristolochia, which is the only plant on which its caterpillars feed. It is mainly found in wet environments, stream banks, uncultivated land and crop margins, from the plains up to about 1,000 metres above sea level.
A species is typically found in spring. It flies from mid-March to the end of May depending on the altitude. It has a single generation per year. In Europe it is protected by the Habitat Directive 92/43/EEC and the Bern Convention and in our territory by Law no. 137 of 19 July 2021 “Protection of Wildlife in the Republic of San Marino”.
