2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollar Coin Designs

US Mint Director Ed Moy on Saturday, August 22, unveiled the 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollar Coin designs.

Meant to honor those who were permanently disabled while serving in the United States Military, the coins will have a face value of $1 and contain 90% silver.

The obverse (head side) bears an image of the legs and boots of three disabled veterans. A pair of crutches is visible along with the inscriptions ‘THEY STOOD UP FOR US,’ ‘IN GOD WE TRUST,’ ‘2010′ and ‘LIBERTY.’

On the reverse (tails side) is a ribbon-wrapped wreath of oak branches with a forget-me-not flower at the base of it. The oak branches are a symbol of strength while the forget-me-not flower is there to remind all of the sacrifices many veteran’s have made while serving the country.

Inside the wreath is the inscription ‘TAKE THIS MOMENT TO HONOR OUR DISABLED DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM.’ Around the outside of the wreath are the words ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,’ E PLURIBUS UNUM’ and ‘ONE DOLLAR.’

According to the mandates of Congress, the silver dollars will be struck at the US Mint facility in West Point and will carry the ‘W’ mintmark accordingly. A maximum of 350,000 of the coins will be produced in both proof and uncirculated condition.

A $10 surcharge added to the price of each coin will be forwarded to the Disabled Veterans’ LIFE Memorial Foundation, which in turn will use the money towards construction of the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington, D.C. This new memorial was authorized by Congress in 2000.

Secretary of the Treasury Timothy F. Geithner approved the coin designs on July 30, 2009. They were authorized by Congress under the American Veterans Disabled for Life Commemorative Coin Act (Public Law 110-277). The act was signed into law by former President Bush on July 17th of last year.

- Proof version: introductory price of $39.95 , regular price of $43.95.

This is a $2 increase from the prices set for last year's programs.

The coin is scheduled for release on February 25, 2010, with introductory pricing available until March 29, 2010.

This proof 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollar is extraordinarily brilliant and features sharp relief and a mirror-like background to highlight the images on both sides of the coin.

The coin designs are emblematic of the many stories of our disabled veterans’ courage, loyalty and sacrifice. The obverse of this coin features an image of the legs and boots of three veterans. The inscription in the banner along the upper rim, THEY STOOD UP FOR US, pays tribute to our courageous disabled veterans who have survived military service injuries for our freedom. Additional inscriptions are IN GOD WE TRUST, 2010 and LIBERTY.

The reverse design depicts a forget-me-not flower at the base of a wreath wrapped in a ribbon that cradles and supports clusters of oak branches. The oak branches represent strength, while the forget-me-not is a widely recognized icon that first served as a reminder of those who fought and became disabled in World War I. The inscriptions are Take This Moment to Honor Our Disabled Defenders of Freedom, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and ONE DOLLAR.

Standard option limit information: To ensure the broadest and fairest access to the 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollar, a limit of 100 units each per household is in effect for this product during the first 30 days of its release. At the end of the initial 30-day period, and each 30-day period thereafter, the United States Mint will re-evaluate this limit and either extend, adjust or remove it.

The introductory price of $39.95 will be in effect from 12:00 noon (ET), on February 25, 2010, through 5:00 pm (ET), on March 29, 2010, after which the regular price of $43.95 will be in effect.
