Issued on April 11, these rectangular Australian legal tender coins depict original indigenous art.
There is huge interest in Australian indigenous art. Created through the millenniums on rocks, bark, canvas and in sculpture, the oldest ongoing tradition of art in the world is now portrayed in 1 oz. of 99.9% pure silver.
Created by Darryl Bellotti, an Indigenous artist of both Yamatji and Nyoongar descent, the coins' reverse designs are inspired by his boyhood memories of a hunting trip in north-western Australia. Portraying either a kangaroo or a turtle, the designs show the animal surrounded by patterns of dots, symbolizing the hunters' journey, and circles, representing the places where they stopped. The obverse of each coin bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination.
