Croatian Mint:
Continuing the successful series of gold and silver collector coins “Autochthonous Croatia” the Croatian National Bank, in collaboration with the Croatian Mint, is issuing the 2 ounce silver coin “Black Lizard”.
The black lizard inhabits the island of Brusnik, which, according to local legend, was named for the harsh conditions where the sea and winds constantly ground and sharpened its rugged shores. This uninhabited island, characterized by its volcanic origin and porous limestone, has been a protected natural monument since 1951. It is home to numerous endemic species, one of which is the Brusnik lizard, thriving amidst the pristine sea and vibrant underwater landscapes.
The new collector coin from the series “Autochthonous Croatia” pays tribute to the rich history and striking beauty of Brusnik Island, as well as the black lizard, one of its most notable inhabitants. This unique 2-ounce coin is struck in ultra high relief and issued in a limited series of only 400 pieces.
New owners will receive their “Black Lizard” collector coin in carefully designed thematic packaging developed in collaboration with Dig Studio designers. The set includes a decorative box, capsule, booklet, and a certificate signed by the Governor of the Croatian National Bank.
You can purchase your piece of autochthonous Croatia, featuring the legendary Brusnik lizard, in the Croatian Mint’s online store starting January 21.
The 2 ounce silver coin “Black Lizard” will be available for ordering on January 21th from 9 a.m.!
The Croatian National Bank, in cooperation with the Croatian Mint, has issued the 2 ounce silver coin “Black Lizard”. This silver collector coin, in the 6 euro denomination, has been minted in a limited series of only 400 pieces. Struck in ultra high relief, it elegantly depicts this native species. In addition to the coin, the accompanying packaging set includes a certificate signed by the Governor of the Croatian National Bank and a declaration book.
Recognizable by its black coloration and turquoise spots, the black lizard, scientifically known as “Podarcis melisellensis melisellensis”, inhabits the island of Brusnik. According to oral tradition, the island derives its name from the harsh conditions where the sea and winds continually “sharpen” its rugged, inaccessible shores. This uninhabited island, characterized by its geological history marked by volcanic origin and porous limestone, has been a protected natural monument since 1951. It provides a sanctuary for numerous endemic species, including the Brusnik lizard, which thrives in an environment of crystal-clear seas and vibrant underwater landscapes.
The design is signed by our renowned sculptor Nikola Vudrag, who introduces us to a story that may not be widely known but is certainly worth telling. The reverse of the coin depicts the topography of the island of Brusnik with sea waves in the background, along with an depiction of the black lizard, while the obverse side features a relief of the black lizard.
The 2 ounce silver coin “Black Lizard” will be delivered at the end of February according to the order sequence.
